Make America GREG Again – Why and What

Well, first it’s an EXTREMELY clever turn of a phrase made famous by someone else. My sisters lobbied hard for using my Middle name “Gregory” instead of my first name while I was still in the hospital. Six decades later, I finally know why. I go by both, depending. After reserving the domain URL, I started thinking about the other 3 words and decided they all have a meaning in my master plan for this blog and podcast. I’m trying to start a new career after “retirement” – by telling a bunch of stories in my own voice. Most people have a career before retiring. I should have tried that.

I really care about corny things like citizenship, lifting all boats, equal rights, and equal opportunity. Actually, that’s not really corny. It’s necessary, if you care about your kids’ futures. I’ll be exploring the idea that what I call “civilization” is organic, the result of the evolution of our species, specifically, our brains. Passing through “The Enlightenment”, specifically, the American Revolution and the resulting Constitution, our species is at a crossroads. Simply put, the choices are Civilization or the Jungle. Bullies are ever-present in the schoolyard, and seem to be gaining ground in the halls of government around the world. I grew up learning that we should be good citizens, and I have a plan to show why you should be one, too. And I plan to have fun doing it.

Here’s a bit from the Podcast description I put together, the back of the book, so to speak….

Besides the pun, what does Make America GREG Again mean, anyway…

Make Stuff. Make things. Make things happen. Science. In America, the Great Experiment. The melting pot. The one with the Great Constitution. Again. Because we haven’t gotten it quite right yet. Actually, we have a long way to go, still. And knowing History helps. And nostalgia, for the right stuff. I’ll cover it all, with a focus on the American Promise, and how we haven’t made good on it yet. And we’ll have fun along the way.

America is breaking. The experiment is failing. The accelerating pace of change is stretching our ability and willingness to live together in peace and freedom. The forces of regression and repression are growing. People are making money off of our discontent and conflict. This podcast is about what we need to take from the last century’s successes in order to continue to build Our More Perfect Union. And I’m going to have fun doing it. Politics, government, history, civic engagement, culture, media, economy, equality.

Take this. It will be good for you.
